What is Clean Design?

Clean Design is the allergen-aware methodology developed by Robin Wilson over 25 years of designing wellness-forward homes for families, executives, and hospitality clients across the United States. First defined in her book Clean Design: Wellness for Your Lifestyle (Greenleaf, 2015), the protocol addresses a simple but overlooked truth: the products and materials inside your home directly affect your health — and most people have no idea what they're living with. She is considered a leading expert on wellness interior design.

Robin Wilson developed the Clean Design Protocol from personal experience. Due to a pan-allergic childhood, she spent decades identifying the hidden sources of allergen exposure in conventional home goods — synthetic finishes, chemical treatments, down fills, and toxic cleaning products — and has created a design methodology that eliminates them without sacrificing beauty or luxury.

The Four Pillars of Clean Design

Materials — Every textile, surface, and product that touches your skin or enters your air should be free from synthetic finishes, harsh chemical treatments, and materials that trap allergens. Clean Design Home® uses cotton, OEKO-TEX certified textiles, and CertiPUR-US certified foams in our textile and mattress collections.

Air — Indoor air quality is directly affected by design choices — from the cleaning products under your sink to the finish on your furniture. Clean Design removes the chemical load from your home environment through intentional product selection.

Surface — Every surface in a Clean Design home is selected and maintained with guidance on non-toxic options, non-formaldehyde adhesives and coatings, fragrances, or allergen-harboring materials. Our focus includes bedding, bath essentials, kitchen goods, and cleaning products.

Space — How a home is organized and maintained determines how allergens accumulate. Clean Design incorporates storage, layout, and material choices that reduce dust, dander, and chemical exposure as a function of how the space operates daily.
